About the position

The Department of Electric Energy (IEL), at the Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering (IE), NTNU, invites applications for a full-time Professorship/Associate Professorship in “Control of Power Electronic Converters and Electric Drives”. The position will be organized in the Power Electronics and Electric Machines research group (PEM), which is one of four research groups in the department.

The main responsibility of the Professor/Associate Professor will be research and teaching within digital control of electric drives and power electronic converters for other applications required for improving productivity, efficiency, stability and sustainability of electrical energy conversion systems. 

Examples of research topics include advanced motor control using digital control algorithms (e.g., model-predictive control, adaptive controllers) and their implementation on digital platforms (e.g., FPGAs, high-speed digital signal processors and System-On-Chip integrated circuits), high-speed optical serial links, etc. Examples of application domains include electrification of transportation (marine, aviation, ground transportation), renewable energy integration, the use of grid following- and grid forming converters in enhancing the grid capacity, and microgrids.

The prospective candidate is expected to take an active role in the creation and development of interdisciplinary research competence in digital control for emerging power electronic converters. The candidate will be responsible for the PESC Digital Control platform used in the department including further development of this platform. The candidate is also expected to be engaged in the future development of relevant courses in the field of digital control of power electronics, with a view to utilizing modern pedagogical and teaching approaches.

Your immediate line manager will be the Head of the Research Group PEM. 

Duties of the position

Research 

• Conduct internationally recognized research within the area of the position. 
• Initiate and lead externally funded research projects in collaboration with industry, energy system companies (grid and power production), regulatory authorities, national and international research partners.

Teaching 

• Teach and further develop courses at bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD level in areas of the position
• Contribute to pedagogical development and innovative teaching methods, including practical work in the laboratories. 

Supervision and academic service 

• Supervise and co-supervise bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD students. 
• Participate in PhD committees, scientific committees, and other academic service tasks at the Department and Faculty. 
• Contribute to dissemination of research results to industry, policymakers, and the broader public.

Required qualifications 

Professor:

You must have the following qualifications required for the position of professor:

• A doctoral degree in electrical engineering, with specialization in Power Electronics and Electric Drives and with a strong background in control theory. Applicants with a PhD in cybernetics and a strong background in electric power engineering will also be considered. 
• Educational competence
• Norwegian language skills at level B2
• Significant contributions to research or artistic development work at the highest level, in accordance with international or national standards in the field

Additional requirements for professor must be documented:

• Quality development in own teaching and supervision over time and a high degree of reflection on own practice
• Broad experience with supervision, preferably at master's/PhD level
• Initiate, lead and/or participate in the development of educational quality in the academic communities
• Competence in knowledge in use (innovation, dissemination and interaction with society) and/or
• Academic leadership and elected posts/appointed roles.

Associate professor:

You must have the following qualifications required for the position of associate professor:

• A doctoral degree in electrical engineering, with specialization in Power Electronics and Electric Drives and with a strong background in control theory. Applicants with a PhD in cybernetics and a strong background in electric power engineering will also be considered.
• Educational competence
• Norwegian language skills at level B2

For both positions: 

You must document relevant basic competence in teaching and supervision at a university/higher education-level, as referenced in the NTNUs guidelines for academic positions. If this cannot be documented, you will be required to complete an approved course in university pedagogy within two years of commencement. NTNU offers qualifying courses.

New employees who do not speak a Scandinavian language by appointment is required, within three years, to demonstrate skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language equivalent to level B2of the course for Norwegian for speakers of other languages at the Department of Language and Literature at NTNU.

Salary and conditions

The position as Professor is normally remunerated with gross salary from NOK 840.000 to NOK 1.274.000 a year. The position as Associate Professor is normally remunerated with gross salary from NOK 690.000 to NOK 885.000 a year. 2% of the salary will be deducted as an obligatory premium to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

Joint work will also be considered. If it is difficult to identify your specific input to a joint project, you must include evidence of your contributions.

In the evaluation of which candidate is best qualified, emphasis will be placed on education, experience and personal and interpersonal qualities. Motivation, ambitions, and potential will also count in the assessment of the candidates. Our assessment of the pedagogical skills will be based on documented pedagogical material, forms of presentation in your academic works, teaching experience, PhD, and Masters supervision, and any other relevant pedagogical background. Both quality and scope will be taken into consideration, and an open scientific practice will be recognized.
